Advocating for improved maternal health with a white ribbon

Cyan International has joined the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. The Alliance, founded in 1999, adopted the white ribbon as its emblem, a symbol of mourning in some places and yet a symbol of hope and life in other places, in dedication to the memory of all girls and women who have died needlessly in pregnancy and childbirth.

The White Ribbon Alliance is an international coalition with members in over 150 countries, advocating to governments and international agencies to multiply financial resources for safe motherhood and improve policies to reduce maternal mortality. They are focussing their efforts on five issues: accountability, child marriage, family planning, health workers and respectful maternity care.

Cyan is supporting maternal health projects in Afghanistan, Chad, Haiti, Nepal and Zimbabwe. Over 2013 and 2014, Cyan will be looking for opportunities to strengthen the maternal health work as efforts are intensified towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
